What are the benefits of decluttering your home?

First off, it sure makes finding things like car keys, glasses, hats, shoes, and important papers a whole lot easier!    Some say that a tidier space can make you feel more relaxed, peaceful, and happier.   Untidy, chaotic spaces can be stressful and may contribute to anxiety, depression, and allergies like asthma.    Clearing up your space can also help reduce dust, mildew, mold, and unwanted pests.  Women who described their homes as being more cluttered had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol and greater depressed mood throughout the day compared with women who described their homes as cleaner and tidier.  I know that some may not agree with keeping everything neat and tidy all the time.  They prefer a little more relaxed space that promotes creativity and fresh ideas, so perhaps there are some areas you may want to give yourself a pass on.    Especially if you have young children.  Provide them with a space where they can be messy, then, when they are done, you can teach them how to clean up and put things away.

For many, decluttering can promote improvement in mental and physical health and increase productivity When you have trouble staying organized, it may make you feel agitated, fidgety, or discomposed.  Organizing your living space can restore feelings of confidence and self-worth.  Removing visual clutter makes it easier to focus on what you are trying to accomplish.

Issues with family or roommates often occur when one person can’t control clutter.  Also, you may be more comfortable inviting friends into your home when it’s uncluttered and tidy.   I have many friends and family who do not want you to show up without a couple of days’ notice because they want to clean the entire house before you come.  You may think your house is messy, but not dirty.   But it’s harder to clean a house that has piles of stuff lying around.   Also, I don’t know about you, but before I can start cooking, I must make sure the kitchen is clean and in order before I can even start.

As we get older, clutter can play a part in our safety.    Items on the floor and loose wires that you could trip over and fall, could end up in a trip to the hospital.   Especially in the bedroom, getting up at night for a trip to the bathroom could end up in a literal trip and fall.  Many people find they sleep better in a tidy bedroom.

Clutter isn’t the same for everyone, in the sense that some clutter might agitate some people, and others can be fine with it.  You have to find your definition of clutter.
