Basement Possibilities
Considering your basement’s full potential—whether for storage, entertaining, or hosting guests, a converted basement can be a custom addition to your home, provided it’s being used to the fullest. Much of this depends on creating a space you want to be in, that also makes sense for your family. The question is, how do you turn an unfinished basement into a comfortable gathering place you need it to be? Here are some ideas that may help.
If your basement is one of your hangout areas, you will need lots of seating. A sofa, chairs, ottomans, and benches are all good choices. Organizing your seating around a TV screen can provide a movie theater vibe. Add a popcorn machine and a fridge for drinks and avoid the crowds. Basements are often open areas, so creating zones can help you use this space efficiently while still feeling open.
As you move downstairs, your first impression comes from the wall next to you. This can be used for an accent wall, setting the tone of your décor theme. If you’re going with a game room type idea, you could hang reflective arcade-style signs on the wall going down the stairs.
Other ideas include sectioning off an area for sleeping. Bunk beds for kids to have sleepovers with friends, where they can have fun and not disturb the rest of the house. Maybe you want to get rid of that old dark paneling and perhaps replace it with new light-colored paneling. You could add a bar and a few chairs. Many use part of the basement space for a workout area. You could add a home office outside of the main activity of the household. Nothing is out of reach.
Also consider accent paneling, graphic wallpaper, tile backsplash, or even a neon sign. If you have a bathroom in the basement, try to make it as multifunctional as possible.
The basement seems to be where we store all the miscellaneous items we can fit upstairs. It makes good sense to add some organized storage space, closets, shelving, and benches with storage. Painting the ceiling, whether it is finished or not, can add an industrial feel and lighten up the room. If you have an unattractive pole or support beam, box it in with wood and paint it.
